LILIANA GELMAN

BOTANICA

Try always, whenever you look at a form, to see the lines in it which have had power over its past and will have power over its futurity.
John Ruskin, from The Elements of Drawing, letter II

The leaves are like footprints of a plant which develops in the realm of the invisible.
                        Jochen Bockemühl

Botanica was my first series when I started to photograph, ten years ago. Most of these images were made then, with very simple equipment. I was a painter and a cartography lover, and found in flowers, buds, leaves and stems a marvelous world in which shapes, textures, lines and color emerged before my eyes like a dance.

Each image, like in life, is not an isolated fragment, it holds fleeting and subtle moments within a process of continuity and change. It is just an instance of a web of relationships omnipresent in life that is not visible to our eyes.
