NATURE NOTES
Every moment we expect the secret filigree of the universe is about to appear to us in all its transparency, but inevitably, this expectation is always vain. |
Italo Calvino |
I have been working for several years on a photographic project about the natural world. I have used my photography to explore the rich vocabulary of lines, forms, and rhythms with which nature writes her poetry.
Each image I take of the natural environment conceals a revelation about its underlying structure. These images serve me as notes on nature's language: a visual vocabulary that configures myriad forms. I use this notational system in the same way a calligrapher will deploy her craft to achieve communion with the content and cadence of a sacred text.
My "notes" go through a careful editing process. The luminosity of each image is gradually modulated until it is delicately balanced between visibility and invisibility. The materiality and boundaries of the image are dissolved. All that remains is a blueprint of the natural world. |
