Before I gave birth to my son, I had little or no contact with the world
of children. In the beginning of my son's life, I would find myself
spending long periods of time staring down at him in his crib. One day,
as I was gazing at him, at the age of two or three weeks , in my
imagination I went back in time to the "dawn of man". I tried to imagine
the gradual sequence of changes that it took to create human species,
how we evolved from moving on all fours to standing erect and tall. As I
stared at this tiny newborn, I reflected on how early man must have
gradually developed a sense of his own body, a sense of self and a
developing consciousness.
